Beginner Classes

Our classes for beginners are designed for people that just want to learn the basic fundamentals of mixed martial arts and self-defense. As a beginner, you can just practice techniques and drills with a partner without having to do any real sparring. On the other hand, if you are a beginner that would like to jump right into sparring after a few classes, we can get you sparring right away too.

If you would just like to learn self-defense to begin with and work your way towards sparring, we can prepare for that next step through positional drilling and positional sparring that will allow you time to develop your skills before moving on to intermediate and advanced sparring. Positional sparring can be light or full bore, depending on the objective for that sparring session. One advantage that standard sparring has in comparison to light sparring, is that it brings a certain level of truth to the situation. Can you really pull off that move you just learned in class yet, against an unwilling opponent?

Advanced Classes

If you decide that you would like to take your beginner martial arts to an intermediate level, then we would recommend to start sparring. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, this is usually called “rolling.” If you want to get good at Jiu-Jitsu, you have to roll. In various kickboxing styles there are different terms used, but sparring is the general term for practicing a martial art while wearing protective gear like gloves and shin guards.

Drilling will help create muscle memory, but sparring will help you test this under pressure. So together with drilling, sparring will provide you with the kind of muscle memory that will create automatic reactions. Sparring provides with scenarios that are fluid that cause you to think on the spot and to start creating muscle memory from your drilling that effective in real world applications.
