Our Classes
Thunderstruck MMA offers a wide range of classes for anyone in Glendale, Peoria, and Phoenix, Arizona; any skill level and any age. Whether you are someone looking to become a serious martial artist, or just want to learn how to defend yourself and your loved ones. We have classes for you.
Our programs include both grappling and striking styles of martial arts. We are currently offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for Self-Defense, Sport Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA applications.
As a part of our Self-Defense curriculum we will be teaching Basic Striking principles. We will soon be offering classes for Advanced Striking and Wrestling.
Beginner Classes
Our classes for beginners, are designed for those wanting to just learn the basic fundamentals of mixed martial arts and self-defense. As a beginner, you can practice techniques and drills with a partner without having to do any real live sparring. On the other hand, if you are a beginner that would like to jump right into sparring after a few classes, we can get you sparring right away too. We can custom tailor your training around your needs.
If you would just like to start learning self-defense now without live sparring we can provide that for you. You can always work your way up towards live sparring, as your level of experience increases. We can prepare for that next step through positional drilling and positional sparring. These will allow you time to develop your skills before moving on to intermediate and advanced sparring.
Positional sparring can be light or intense, depending on the objective for that sparring session. Drilling involves practicing a technique on an opponent that is working together with you to help you practice that move little to no resistance.
One advantage that Standard Sparring has in comparison to Positional Sparring or Situational Sparring, is that it brings a certain level of truth to the situation. It will let you know, if you can really pull off these new moves against an unwilling opponent yet or not. In Jiu-Jitsu we call this “Rolling” and in Wrestling we call it “Live.”
Advanced Classes
If you decide that you would like to take your beginner martial arts to an intermediate level, then we would recommend to start sparring. As mentioned before, In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu this is called “rolling.” If you want to get good at Jiu-Jitsu, you really have have to “roll”. In various kickboxing styles there are different terms used, but sparring is the general term for practicing a striking martial art against a partner (while wearing protective gear like gloves and shin guards).
Drilling will help create muscle memory for techniques, but sparring will help you test this under pressure. So together with drilling, sparring will provide you with the kind of muscle memory that will create automatic reactions. Sparring provides you with scenarios that allow you to think about the best actions and reactions under pressure. It also gives you an opportunity to hone in your techniques against a resisting opponent. So you can get better at pulling off these techniques in real situations.
This process helps you create muscle memory from a combination of drilling and sparring. This will help you make better choices offensively and defensively, as well increase your upstanding of the techniques you are learning. The end result will give you something effective in both competition and self-defense applications in the real world. Through time and repetition, you can build automatic reactions for common situations.
